Quinton's biopsies showed he had Pythiosis.  Pythiosis is an uncommon fungal infection which can affect the dog topically or gastrointestinally.    It is transmitted through stagnant water - the dog may drink, stand, or swim in the water and become infected.  (Which as a stray would be likely.) The only way to cure the disease is to go in and remove the fungus very early on.  Our Vet said it is very difficult to get all the fungus and prevent a relapse, especially once the dog is in a wasting/emaciated condition.  The Vet said in all his years this was his first case of seeing this diagnosis.

Quinton's Symptoms:

SEVERELY emaciated yet would not eat (initally at shelter)

Eating but not gaining any weight at all (once in rescue)

Very foul smelling, watery, CONSTANT diarrhea

Vomitting (at the shelter and then again at the end)

Inconclusive lab work - fecals, blood work all normal
